Mozambique is a popular destination for budget travelers from South Africa and abroad, thanks to its good weather, excellent surfing and diving opportunities, and relatively cheap accommodation and transport costs. Travelers generally start their journey in Maputo and spend a few days exploring the city before venturing into the more rural parts of the country.

Maputo is the capital of Mozambique and it is worth spending a few days in Maputo before traveling further north along the coastline. Maputo has a number of cheap accommodation options and there are a number of hostels and affordable self-catering guesthouses that have opened in different parts of the city due to the strong demand for cheap accommodation. Maputo’s most popular tourist attraction is the bustling fish market in the north of the city in Costa do Sol, where one can buy all kinds of seafood imaginable.

After spending some time in Maputo, budget travelers usually head to Xai-xai or Tofo. Xai-xai is a small town along the coast. There are minibus taxis from Maputo to Xai-xai and the drive takes about 5 hours on unpaved roads. Xai-xai Beach attracts tourists looking for a relaxing, stress-free beach vacation. It is a less commercialized area and there are no real hostels that offer accommodation to backpackers. However, it does have campgrounds for travelers with tents, and there are also a number of affordable guest houses in the area. Xai-xai Beach is clean and pristine due to the relatively low number of tourists visiting the area.

Tofo is the other popular destination for budget travelers and is further north than Xai-xai. Tofo is approximately an 8-hour drive from Maputo and a 30-minute drive from the bustling town of Inhambane. It has a number of hostels and budget accommodations, the most famous of which are Fatima’s Nest and Bamboozi Beach Lodge. Travelers in Tofo can enroll in one of the many PADI diving courses on offer, and diving takes place along Tofo’s coastline, which is rich in marine life, including whale sharks, manta rays and many species of fish. Tofo Beach is also a popular surfing spot because of the barrel-shaped waves that provide excellent surfing conditions. Tofo gets very busy during peak holidays and is especially busy in December and January.

Mozambique has a lot to offer to travelers with budget constraints looking for a truly African experience. It offers unique and exciting activities that cannot be enjoyed elsewhere in Southern Africa, and it remains cheap as it is a relatively obscure destination that has not yet been highly commercialized.
