Overseas, but not above budget

What budget travel means to you?

Tour takes us out of our comfort zones and inspires us to see, taste and try new things. It constantly challenges us, not only to adapt to and explore new surroundings, but also to engage with different humans, to embrace new things as they come and to share new and relevant experiences with friends and daughter.

Choose economical destinations.

Where to go for hot is a wide choice. But take Sydney off the bucket list. Australia may have the climate, but they have the prices to match. Ditto for the Barbados. Check out Ecuador, Honduras and Colombia. Yes, Colombia has seriously cleaned up its act. Now it just needs to restore its image and become ‘the’ new destination. So now would be a good time to go to Medellin. The year round weather in Bogata is too cold. The daytime maximum temperature hovers around 20C and it can drop to five at night, so you really won’t thaw out there.

Fancy a trip to Europe? While you may have always wanted to go to Paris, Prague or Budapest are in a similar league – but much cheaper. In fact, a rough calculation is that Eastern Europe is 25 to 50 percent cheaper than Western Europe. And not so touristy.

Book tickets online to get the best deals.

Buy your tickets well in advance and try to avoid the high season, when everything is terribly expensive. With online options, travel agents are joining pantry girls as a career choice. So do your homework and save.

The flip side suggestion is to make a last minute booking if you really don’t care where you end up. Just make sure you have your passport, visa and vaccinations to hand. Then click on “I don’t mind – inspire me!” button and see what appears.

Find affordable housing.

Finding a place to lay your head at the end of the day has always been a big problem. Hostels have been around for a long time, but they are geared towards the backpackers and you may not appreciate the party animals rushing it into the next room at 2am. B&B is another option, but the established ones are usually a bit pricey.

So along comes Airb&b, an affordable home stay option. Other sites to check are Homestays and Wimdu. As times get tighter, ordinary people rent out their spare rooms at affordable prices. This site allows you to view the listings — complete with photos and details about the person who owns the home — and it comes in a variety of sizes, from least to most expensive.

Save a fortune on meals.

Host families often offer breakfast, but it is often no more than a piece of toast and a pat of butter and jam. Stock up on fruits, sandwiches, peanut butter and the like and start the day right. Buy cheese in the evening and in the morning you will be fine. Buy an immersion heater, buy a one-cup plunger pot, and make your own coffee. Breakfast in will save you serious money. Then have your big meal during lunch. Many restaurants – including some very well-known Michelin stars – offer daily specials and they are of good quality. After a hearty meal in the morning and early afternoon, you’ll be ready to get by on pre-dinner snacks. And it’s healthier for you.

Travel like a local.

Instead of relying on taxis – which can get very expensive very quickly – study on your destination’s bus and train system. Another good reason to stay with a host family is that many of them offer an airport pick-up service for a reasonable price. And your hosts can tell you how to get around the city.
