What budget travel means to you?
Travelling takes us out of our comfort zones and inspires us to check, taste and try a new worlds. It constantly challenges us, not only to adapt to and explore new surroundings, but also to engage with different individuals, to embrace adventures as they come and to share new and significant experiences with playmate and girlfriends.
Want to know how to make the most of your travel dollar? Do you want to know how you can travel cheaply in this day and time? You’ll be happy to know that cheap travel deals are still easy to find if you know where to look!
For example, let’s talk about air travel. It used to be that companies flew their employees everywhere and never had a second thought. Most of the time they even flew first class! I have a friend whose company flew her to Germany 3 or 4 times a year, first class all the way. No budget needed. Now they do video and phone conferences and no more flights, budget or not. The sad thing is, her company could have continued to send its employees abroad if they’d done a little research and figured out how to cut costs.
Fortunately, for the everyday traveler, there are many ways to travel cheaply. Years ago, if you planned to fly, you had to buy a return plane ticket. No one ever bought a one-way ticket unless they had no intention of returning and really only went one-way. Now you can save a lot of money by searching different airlines for one way fares. For example, you can fly to your destination with AirTran and then return with Jet Blue.
So what’s the catch, right? I mean, why were round-trip fares cheaper years ago, but not anymore? Well, the airlines know that people are very budget conscious these days. There will probably be a trade-off that you may have to have a layover and not fly non-stop, but it’s worth it, right? I would certainly rather save money on a flight with a short layover than pay a huge amount more for a direct flight.
Okay, let’s say you don’t plan on flying, but want to take a budget vacation anyway. No problem! Trains are a great way to travel, and you can still get your own car and not break the bank. Choose a place that is not too far away and if possible go in the low season.
You can also consider renting a house or apartment rather than staying in a hotel. My cousin recently came to visit for a little over a week and her family rented a house near Disney World. I have to admit that I like to stay in hotels myself, but it was a great idea for her family. They were allowed to have breakfast and another meal at home (much cheaper) and then they ate one meal a day. This made it really easy for them to take a cheap travel vacation, go to the theme parks and still save a lot of money, even with a family of four.
