Cheap travel accommodation – Youth hostels versus camping

What budget travel means to you?

Travelling takes us out of our coziness and inspires us to check, taste and try new things. It constantly challenges us, not only to adapt to and explore new surroundings, but also to engage with different people, to embrace new things as they come and to share new and significant experiences with playmate and loved ones.

Wherever you travel, accommodation takes up a huge chunk of your travel budget and unless you find a way to save, you may end up with a much shorter trip than you hope. One of the first things to affect your lodging budget depends on how many of you travel together. There are huge benefits to traveling in a group or even traveling with another couple. You can save money by making staying in youth hostels or camping sites much more comfortable and cost effective if you are 4 or more people.

Of course hotels are nice, but in reality you can buy cheap accommodation for the price of a hotel room for one night. Of course you don’t have too much comfort, but you sleep alone, right?

For cheap accommodation you basically have 2 choices. Youth hostels and campsites. Let’s take a quick look at the pros and cons of each.

First, youth hostels offer cheap, cost-effective accommodations that are often very centrally located. The accommodation is usually very basic with shared dormitories and shared bathrooms. There is usually one central kitchen and you basically buy a bed for the night. Some offer en-suite rooms with more comfort, but these are probably more in the price range of a hotel suite. Its main advantage is the fact that it is centrally located and close to all the sights and attractions you would like to explore as a tourist.

Camping offers much more comfort and if you don’t like being in a dorm with 20 other backpackers, then camping is definitely worth it. It’s probably much cheaper than a youth hostel, but you’ll need to have your own tent or motorhome. While it’s much cheaper, it’s usually on the outskirts of cities and commuting back and forth can become a hassle — and an expensive exercise. Camping can be a lot of fun and a great option if you’re traveling with a group.
