What travel means to you?
Travel takes us out of our coziness and inspires us to check, taste and try new things. It constantly challenges us, not only to adapt to and explore new surroundings, but also to engage with different individuals, to embrace new things as they come and to share new and relevant experiences with friends and wife.
Traveling with children can be challenging, as any parent knows. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce stress and nerves. Make sure your family travels without incident by following these tips.
1. Book online. Instead of dragging kids to a travel agency where they are sure to get bored checking your options with the agency, check out online travel websites. You can spend as much time as you need when the kids are in bed or at school.
2. Book everything in advance. That means not only arranging and paying for the airline tickets, but also the hotel and the car. When you arrive at your destination, you no longer have to wander around to find a vacancy, just pick up the car and go straight to your hotel. You can even take a virtual tour of many hotels online.
3. Be prepared. Bring toys and things to keep your kids entertained on the plane. For older kids, surprise them with a fun travel game, new Game Boy cartridge, or a coloring book. If the flight is going to be particularly long, buy several treats in advance and stash them in your carry-on bag, pulling out a new item if the kids are bored and nagging.
4. Build the anticipation. For children aged 2-10, you can build up the idea of flying, especially if they have never been on an airplane before. Learn about the type of plane you’re flying and talk regularly about how exciting it will be before you take off.
5. Pack snacks. Sure, the airlines are giving out snacks, but some companies are cutting back on freebies like peanuts (which aren’t suitable for kids under 2 anyway) and cookies. To keep your child from getting cranky while waiting for his meal, you can bring Cheerios or a sandwich.
6. Separate siblings. If your kids tend to bicker, it might be a good idea to sit between them! This at least keeps them from fighting for elbow room and keeps them at arm’s length so they can’t hit each other. Switch seats mid-flight if there is a window seat to avoid problems.
7. Play music. Bring an iPod or Walkman for each child so they can listen to music. It helps relieve the nerves and keeps them busy for a while!
8. Layer clothing. When flying from one hemisphere to another, you have to take climate changes into account. If you’re departing from a warm climate but landing in a colder place, don’t forget to pack sweaters for everyone on the plane. They won’t help if you put them all in the suitcases. And if you land in a warmer place, don’t forget to wear light clothes under your winter clothes.
9. Hold on to it. In a busy airport, it’s all too easy to lose a little one. Even if you lose sight of your toddler for a few seconds, you will have a heart attack and it is best to avoid the situation. All children under the age of 10 must physically touch a parent at all times. If you are of different ages, you can give older children the responsibility and hold the hands of smaller ones. This can also be a good time to buy a child harness and use it on younger children who have a tendency to wander.
10. Stay hydrated. In airplanes it is very common to get dehydrated because the air is recycled and is dry. To avoid this, make sure you drink plenty of water and that your kids do too. This is especially important for nursing mothers.
11. Carry medicines with you. Never leave medicines in your check-in bags, they can be lost and trying to get another prescription medicine can be a hassle if you are miles from home. Even over-the-counter medications such as cough syrups and allergy relievers should be packed in your carry-on bag, the last thing you want to do when you arrive is look for Benadryl.
12. Fly at night. If you are traveling with a baby, it is often a good idea to take an overnight flight so that the child sleeps for the entire flight. This can work for older kids too!
13. Keep the kids busy. Bring paper and crayons so they can make cards and drawings for loved ones. These are great gifts if you are going to stay with family or friends. If not, this could be the start of a signed travel journal to share with friends when they return.
14. Make it an adventure. Look out the windows at the clouds and see what you see, animals, castles, etc. What would your kids do if they lived on top of the clouds? Ask the flight attendant if your children can visit the cockpit to see how the plane is flown and have them tell you all about it when they return. Most long flights are perfectly prepared to allow children to spend a few minutes visiting with the pilots once they have reached cruising altitude.
15. Play games. There are plenty of travel games that can be adapted to airplanes. Word games are best for this, they can be kept fairly quiet and distract kids. Memory games keep kids so busy remembering the order of items that they forget to fight or squirm.
16. Take plows. If you are traveling with your spouse or another adult, it is a good idea to work shifts with the children. While one adult stays in the waiting area with them and plays a game, the other can go pick up the tickets and make other arrangements. The same goes for collecting your luggage and finding the rental car.
Air travel doesn’t have to be a nightmare, if you prepare in advance. You know best what your kids like to do and what kinds of things will distract them, these should be your surprises. For example, if you know your son loves I Spy books, get him a new one to watch on the plane. And if your daughter is eager to have the latest boy band CD, surprise her with it as soon as you leave.
